Getting to & Around Roatán: A Visitor's Transport Guide
From RTB airport to water taxis — everything you need to reach the island and explore it with ease.
Roatán is easier to reach than many travellers expect, and getting around the island is simple once you know your options. Whether you are flying in for a week, sailing in on a cruise or hopping over from mainland Honduras, this guide covers everything you need — how to get to Roatán and how to get around it once you arrive.
Getting to Roatán
By Air — Roatán International Airport (RTB)
Most visitors arrive at Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (airport code RTB), located near Coxen Hole on the south side of the island. It is small, modern and easy to navigate. Roatán receives direct international flights — many of them seasonal — from several United States hubs such as Miami, Houston, Atlanta and Dallas, plus seasonal routes from Canada. If you are travelling within Honduras, short domestic flights connect Roatán with San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba on the mainland.
By Ferry from the Mainland
If you are already in Honduras, a passenger ferry connects La Ceiba on the mainland with Roatán in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. It is a scenic and budget-friendly option, though the crossing can be choppy — if you are prone to seasickness, come prepared.
By Cruise Ship
Cruise passengers arrive at one of two ports: Mahogany Bay or the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole. If you are visiting on a cruise, see our guide to the best Roatán cruise excursions for tours that fit a cruise-day schedule.
From the Airport to Your Hotel
Roatán International Airport sits roughly 20–40 minutes from the main tourist areas of West Bay and West End, depending on traffic. You have two main options to reach your hotel.
Private Airport Transfer (Recommended)
The easiest, most stress-free option is a pre-booked private transfer. Your driver is waiting when you land, the price is fixed and agreed in advance, and the vehicle is air-conditioned — no negotiating, no surprises after a long travel day. Couples and small families can book a private SUV transfer, while larger groups with more luggage will be more comfortable in a private van transfer.
Airport Taxis
Taxis are available outside the terminal. They do not use meters, so always agree the fare before you get in. Rates to West Bay or West End are higher than a pre-booked transfer during busy periods, and prices can vary — confirming the price up front avoids any misunderstanding.
Getting Around the Island
Taxis — Private vs. Colectivo
There are two kinds of taxis in Roatán. Colectivo (shared) taxis follow set routes, pick up multiple passengers and are very inexpensive — the local way to travel. Private taxis take only your group and cost more. With either type, agree the fare before the ride, and have small bills ready.
The West End – West Bay Water Taxi
One of the handiest ways to get around the west side of the island is the water taxi between West End and West Bay. The ride takes about 10 minutes, costs only a few US dollars, and runs throughout the day — so wherever you stay, you can easily enjoy both areas.
Rental Cars & Scooters
Renting a car or scooter gives you freedom to explore, and the main road through the west and central parts of the island is paved. Keep in mind that traffic drives on the right, roads in more remote areas can be rough, and signage is limited. For most visitors staying around West Bay and West End, taxis and tours are simpler than a rental.
Private Transportation & Tours With Pickup
If you would rather skip the logistics entirely, our private transportation service can take you anywhere on the island — airport runs, restaurant trips, day excursions or East End exploring. And nearly all ROA LIVE tours include round-trip transportation from your hotel, so you never have to worry about getting there.
Group Transportation for Events in Roatán
Moving a group around the island is a very different job from getting one family to its hotel — and it is something ROA LIVE handles regularly. When you are responsible for transporting a whole group, what matters is that everyone arrives together, on time and without stress. Our team coordinates the vehicles, drivers and timing so the logistics never become your problem.
We provide group transport for a wide range of occasions. Destination weddings rely on us to shuttle guests between hotels, the ceremony and the reception. Schools and universities trust us with safe, supervised transport for student trips. Companies book us for teams arriving to meetings, retreats and corporate events, while institutional and government delegations count on organised, punctual transfers for official visits. We also move attendees travelling to conferences, forums and exhibitions hosted at venues across Roatán — the kind of events that draw visitors from mainland Honduras and abroad.
If you are organising any kind of group travel, contact our team with your dates, group size and itinerary, and we will build a transportation plan around your event.
Money tip: US dollars are widely accepted across Roatán alongside the Honduran lempira. Carry small bills in cash for taxis, tips and small purchases, and always agree taxi fares before the ride begins.
